So far three million jobs have been lost due to the presidential economic plan which has dug this country into an even deeper deficit and put the nation in debt for years to come. And what has the president or government done? More tax cuts for the rich-which supposedly would create four million jobs. But instead a whopping three million jobs have been lost and the rich received about fifty percent of the total amount from the tax cuts. Now, people will claim (due to misleading “facts” presented by the government) that the job loss is due to illegal immigration-which is not true.
David Card did an investigation in 1990 which discussed the entrance of 125,000 Cuban immigrants arriving in Southern Florida between May and September of 1980 and found that the immigrants increased the city’s labor force by seven percent. Card found that the wages and unemployment opportunities of workers who already lived in were not hurt by this large inflow of immigrants. The reality is this-immigrants increase the supply of labor, immigrants increase the demand for goods and services produced in the U.S. This leads to higher wages and employment for all workers in the U.S. Some immigrants even become entrepreneurs, creating jobs for other immigrants and natives. Giovanni Period of the University of California has done a study that finds over the 1980-2000 period the inflow of immigrants lead to a two percent increase in the average wages of native born Americans. The job loss is not because of people coming in this country illegally or legally-which ever argument you choose to make-the job loss occurs because corporations want more money/more profit. And they get it when jobs are exported. Closing borders won’t solve this countries problems. It will simply perpetuate and make it easier for multinational corporations to enter third world nations to rob of resources and exploit people for cheaper labor. Closing borders-the only ones that will benefit are the corporations.
